Third mock exam

In the clip "Hustle" we are presented with Levi Strauss' theory of binary opposites - the idea that within any media we are shown two conflicting sides that clash against each other. In this clip , it was a woman who was represented as material, seductive and cunning. While the man was meant to be dominant , intimidating and an uncomplicated yet confrontational character.

Very early on in the clip we see a close up of the female 'hustler'. From this close up we can see that she has a smirk on her face and is making direct eye contact with the shopkeeper. The audience can assume that she has a plan / idea or something that both the surrounding characters and the audience don't know. The effect this has is it intrigues the audience are intrigued in what's to happen next. This supports the representation because her plans and intentions are not made clear.

Also during the clip we see a pan of the female 'hustler' trying on a revealing dress. From this we can see that the dress is tightly fitted. From this we can assume that this was meant to distract the shopkeeper so that she can 'misplace' her ring. The effect this has is it captured their attention - however it does make the audience feel tricked later on - this supports the representation because the dress supports the "seductive" representation but also enhances the cunning representation because of the fact that she was able to trick the shopkeeper and the audience

We also see that the female 'hustler' is wearing red nail varnish. This is shown in a mid shot where she was seen to be frantically looking for her ring. Red has connotations to: danger; warnings; seductive and sexy. The directors intention was to signify the personality of this woman. The effect this has is that is that it makes the audience wonder what's about to commence. This supports the representations because it warns the audience she is a character that they're not supposed to support, but it could be also be said that it supports the representation because a woman is stereotypically meant to be sexy.

During the clip, we see a point of view shot. An example of this is when the camera was following the lady around he shop while she was looking for her ring. From this we can see that the woman is worried - reflected by the camera moving frantically but the underlying deeper meaning to this is that this is all part of her plan, which is made more clear towards the end of clip. The effect this has is that the audience get a sense of how the woman must be feeling. This supports the representation because of her because her intentions are not clear to the shopkeeper.

The main male 'hustler' is shown to be intimidating. This is shown by the close ups mainly used. From this we can see that his facial expressions explicitly show what he is feeling - making his intentions clear to the shopkeeper. The effect this has is that is the audience are sure about his intentions. This supports he representations that he is uncomplicated character because he as soon as he appears the audience know what is planning to do.

During the duration of the male hustlers time in the scene the close ups are at eye level. This is unusual because eye level shows equality.

An example of Chekhov's gun is where the female hustler is seen to be playing with ring - even bragging. At one point there is an extreme close up of the ring with a deep focus. This is effective because it shows the audience that the ring bears significance in the clip.

Also both characters seem to look at the camera directly as if it was a person (point of view). When the female hustler does she says "I'm sure you will" but the male hustler looking at the camera smiling , expecting the shopkeeper to make a last minute plea. This shows a sign of power. This supports the representation that the woman's intentions were unclear but the man' intentions is clear.

Semiotics

Analysis of my photos:
The semitiotics in the mise en scene photo I have constructed is to show an insubordinate, messy and unorganized student who does take pride in both their learing and the presentation of the notes. The setting shows that the table is a messy table. The books are scattered across the table. I think the choice if highlighters are intresting because they are used to separate the useful information from the useless their could’ve been pens and pencils but the highlighters show an attempt to take an interest in their learning. In the photo we can also see that the books are overlapping shows that the student has tried to go through not one but all of their subjects and has slowly lost interest with the subject and we can see that from where each book is placed in a pile. Also the fact that the majority of it of the photo is in low level lighting means that this is something that was revision that didn’t fulfil anything. Also the flash in the corner could represent the student and how bright they are. Notice how the light is not slowly dying and as we look towards the centre of the spark it seems to be glowing.

Emma’s photos:
The semiotics in the mise en scene photo that Emma has constructed is to show a lazy, unorganized student who does not take pride in their studies. The planner shows that the student has attempted to show organisation. The bottle of water seems to be showing that they are a sensible student and is a better alternative than a can of fizzy drink, an energy drink of somesort. Again the use of highlighters show that they have tried to separate the useful information from the information that is not relevant to their studies.

Semiotics

Semiotics (semiotics):
Semiotics – the study of signs Broken down into 2 parts:
Signifier (What it is)
Signified (what it suggests) Signs are culturally learnt. There are 3 types of signs:
• Iconic: looks like what it represents but suggests something more. For example a leather jacket is meant to represent being cool.

 • Indexical: indicates / makes reference to something else. Someone with their eyes making direct eye contact, with their hands folded stood upright means that there angry.

 • Symbolic: it has an arbitrary meaning. The meaning is only something we’ve learnt. For example a dove symbolising peace. Mise-en-scene, meaning EVERYTHING in the scene. It centres on these areas:
 • Setting
 • Body language
• Facial expressions
• Hair and makeup
• Costume
• Colour and lighting (high key and low key)

Mock Exam : Doctor Who

In the sequence of Doctor who we are shown an example of Levi Strauss' binary opposites - the idea that within a piece of media there are two forces clashing throughout for example; good and evil. We are presented with two representations of gender : the man who is initially represented as evil, powerful and smug. Yet, the woman is presented as pure-hearted , powerless and defeated.

The director has chosen this mid shot while introducing Martha. In this shot we can that Martha in a tight black leather suit. This has been chosen because we can see that Martha is a woman who endures a lot of physical action. I think this shot is effective because we can see both her facial expressions - which show her looking quite defeated and introduced to what role she plays.

The antagonist in this scene is looking down at Martha while she enters the room. This is a reference to how powerful he is - and that he is all knowing. I think this is effective because because the levels are subliminal to who is powerful and allows the audience to visually see it.

During the scene we see Martha kneeling to the antagonist. Kneeling often has connotations of royalty. We could see that the antagonist sees himself as king-like , which also links to the idea of power. I think this scene is effective because it shows the stereotype of men being dominant and women being passive, and that this idea still works regardless of context.

The use of close ups have been chosen for a specific reason in this scene. The close ups have been used to emphasise the characters emotions. Interestingly both characters have a smirk on their face whenever they are at the height of power. So whenever a character has knowledge of something the other doesn't , they have a smirk on their face , hence the close up. I think this is effective because it's a simple way of showing a shift in power.

Both characters seen to be both wearing black. Black is a colour worn to funerals - with the connotations of death. Also only the antagonist wears black usually. My interpretation of this is that Martha thinks that she's defeated. I think this shot was essential to show the climax of tension.

Overall women are presented as compassionate , kind hearted , pure but also sneaky and cunning. While males are presented as dominant and cruel. I think these are inaccurate representations of men and women because they only show one side to both genders.
